URANTIA READERS INTERNATIONAL                             November/December

Dear Readers,
(New website – urantiareadersintl.com)

There are two major topics of discussion that we wish to discuss this time around: the first being sort of a follow
up on last months report related to material anxiety and the need for spiritual balance to harmonize one’s life, and
the second relates to the need for absolute honesty in providing the truth of Biblical Scripture within the Urantia
revelation if the institutional religions are to survive the twenty first century.

If you read our last report (July/August) you might remember my comments on the economy and how a spiritual
philosophy of life can best overcome the anxieties that will inevitably arise during the vicissitudes of extreme
economic conditions, and this inevitable anxiety is often related to that which one thinks he materially owns.
Therefore, relevant to our discussion are sections on materialism and secularism presented in the “Book” in
paper 195 that might shed some light on the manifold problems of selfish living. I’ll present some of these as a
precursor to my own thoughts:

“The mechanistic naturalism of some supposedly educated men and the thoughtless secularism of the man in
the street are both exclusively concerned with things; they are barren of all real values, sanctions, and
satisfactions of a spiritual nature, as well as being devoid of faith, hope, and eternal assurances.  One of the
great troubles with modern life is that man thinks he is too busy to find time for spiritual meditation and religious
devotion.” (2077 -3)

“The twentieth century has brought new problems for Christianity and all other religions to solve. The higher a
civilization climbs, the more necessitous it becomes the duty to “seek first the realities of heaven” in all of man’s
efforts to stabilize society and facilitate the solution of its material problems.”

“Religion has become a more and more a nominal influence, largely a ritualistic exercise. The majority of
professed Christians of Western civilization are unwittingly actual secularists.” (2081-3)

“But even after materialism and mechanism have been more or less vanquished, the devastating influence of the
twentieth-century secularism will still blight the spiritual experience of millions of unsuspecting souls.” (2081-1)

“The secularistic human society, notwithstanding its unparalleled materialistic achievement, is slowly
disintegrating…” (2082-2)

“Secular social and political optimism is an illusion. Without God, neither freedom and liberty, nor property and
wealth will lead to peace.”(2082-4)

“If Christianity persists in neglecting its spiritual mission while it continues to busy itself with social and material
problems, the spiritual renaissance must await the coming of these new teachers of Jesus’ religion who will be
exclusively devoted to the spiritual regeneration of men.” (2082-9)

“The modern age will refuse to accept a religion which is inconsistent with facts and out of harmony with its
highest conceptions of truth, beauty and goodness.” (2083-1)

“Only when man has become sufficiently disillusioned by the sorrowful disappointments attendant upon the
foolish and deceptive pursuits of selfishness, and subsequent  to the discovery of the barrenness of formalized
religion, will he be disposed to turn wholeheartedly to the gospel of the kingdom, the religion of Jesus of
Nazareth.” (2083-3)

“Christianity has dared to lower its ideals before the challenge of human greed, war-madness, and lust for
power…” (2083-5)

“…the Christian churches of the twentieth century stand as great, but wholly unconscious, obstacles to the
immediate advance of the real gospel—the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.” (2085)

Recently the economic news commentator of CNBC (the stock market channel) experienced a partial meltdown,
(once referred to as a nervous breakdown) on his prime time news presentation because it was assumed that
the Feds weren’t going to reduce interest rates the next day. He had what was tantamount to a virtual tantrum due
to the economic news that the United States is in a housing crisis in the home sales market, which he feels is
comparable to that of the great depression (1930’s), and the only way to escape the negative consequences and
save the banks was to lower interest rates. He stated that as many as seven million people under the present
circumstances might easily lose their homes to foreclosure, all because the Feds refuse to lower interest rates.
This was news that indicated the economy had flaws that might influence its overall performance which was
anathema to his expectations. My comments last month were pertinent to a discussion of a personalized religion
to allay the anxiety that will eventually arise with the millions who have made the mistake of living beyond their
means (and it’s not just the housing market). The drastic altering of one’s life style, almost overnight, is anxiety
producing because one’s whole mental structure (psyche) is assaulted – in the real estate game, it’s called
“trapped in the bubble”, can’t afford to sell (due to a prodigious loss), and can’t afford to keep (due to unaffordable
higher interest rates/higher taxes).

Two things emerge as matters of importance: First, is the fact that many of the homeowners living beyond their
means bought with variable interest loans, and when the loan interest was converted to non-variable which was
seemingly inevitable, the home owner could not absorb the additional cost – something they should have
considered, if they were in any way financially responsible; and secondly, the attitude and response of a typical
wall street insider type of individual (the news commentator in this case) who wanted the economy up at any cost.
Why should the Federal government lower interest rates to cover the bank’s losses and the losses to individuals
who gambled on variable rates of interest, knowing full well that there was a high probability of conversion to fixed
rates if interest should rise. (Fixed rates are always higher than variable rates) Never is there a mention of the
real underlying conditions contributing to the ensuing panic resulting from the above conditions. The rationale
being, keep the market fluid - when people buy it stimulates the economy, so why discourage sales even if the
buyer can’t afford a lifestyle beyond his means. People across the country have bought into this, spending far
beyond their means just to gobble up their piece of the American pie, and often way before they have earned that
piece of the pie – a mere absence of human restraint. Never before in the history of the world have so many
people been so overstretched in their personal finances, and all through excessive borrowing based on an
unrealistic optimism, along with the encouragement of their local bank. And as was pointed out last month:
never before in the world’s history they need the consolation and stabilization of sound religion. In the face of
unprecedented scientific achievement and mechanical development there is spiritual stagnation and philosophic
chaos.” (1090-2)

The above is merely representative of a myriad of modern scenarios taking place daily, and as the revelation
states: “The mechanistic naturalism of some supposedly educated men and the thoughtless secularism of the
man in the street are both exclusively concerned with things…” A brief analysis of our social dilemma from a
Urantia book perspective can be found on our website under the essay   “Synchronicity and Harmony”, which
presents the necessity for material and spiritual balance in our lives, in order to moderate our material desires,
yet enjoy what the material order has to offer.

Our revelation on pages 1768 and 2065 informs us that the Christian religion of the new testament along with
much of the old testament, while definitely flawed, fragmented, uninspired, and obviously NOT THE WORD OF
GOD, still represents the most advanced religion on the planet. Therefore, in revealing the most relevant portion
of these Scriptures it was incumbent upon the authors of the Urantia Book to present only the unadulterated truth
in our enlightenment of these Biblical Scriptures, otherwise the revelation itself becomes just as outrageous as
the fabrication of certain historical events presented in the Bible.

Once Christian fundamentalists accept the fact that the Scriptures of the Bible were not the word of God and
neither were the authors inspired, and that the authors were, at least in part the scribes of the day, only then can
they come to grips with the new realities presented in the Urantia book and begin to advance the works truly
ordained by God. Never forget, it is the Urantia book that is the 5th epochal revelation to the planet, not the Bible.
As soon as this is recognized fundamentalists can then accept changes to the once perceived Scriptures of
infallibility, but as long as they stubbornly cling to the idea that Scripture is the Word of God, change on their part
is inherently impossible, simply because God does not make mistakes.

Not having read much of the Bible, yet somewhat familiar with some well known aspects of Scripture, I was
appalled to read that Jonah spent three days inside a large fish, presumably a whale, after deciding not to follow
God’s request to go to a certain city (Nineveh), instead he went by boat in the opposite direction to an island.
When the seas became turbulent the people on board assumed God was mad and had caused the rough seas,
all onboard wanted to know who offended God, and when Jonah confessed, he was tossed overboard into the
mouth of a whale. After three days in the belly of the fish he asked for God’s forgiveness. God accepted Jonah’s
supplications and allowed him to be regurgitated on a beach, all because he was back in Gods favor. Somehow,
when I originally heard the story I thought it was only three minutes. Someday all the fabrications of the Bible will
be exposed such as those events already uncovered in the Urantia book. These were absolutely necessary in a
new revelation for any future credibility to be attached to the Bible. For as the Urantia book points out, new
generations are no longer willing to accept these myths of the past.

In the account of Matthew, I noticed he lists Bartholomew as an apostle instead of his Bartholomew’s son
Nathaniel. The Bible never mentioned that Matthew was totally blind which he must have been if he confused
Nathaniel with his father (Bartholomew). The only account for this was that the scribe writing for Matthew
somehow became confused, because there was no way that Matthew could have lived and worked with
Nathaniel and made such a mistake. In the chapter of Matthew it also mentions John Alpheus not as a twin to
Judas Alpheus but rather Judas as Lebbaeus with a surname of Thaddaeus, another mistake, which if Matthew
was the only author, never would have been made. Thaddaeus and Lebbaeus in reality were the nicknames of
John and Judas Alpheus. Another account that I was unfamiliar with was the mention of Mary the mother of Jesus
having become pregnant prior to her marriage to Joseph, and Joseph receiving a message from an angel to
proceed with the marriage. Now, I wonder just who could have thought this up.

Christianity, based as it is on Scripture is fortunate in one sense, and that is, it didn’t come directly from God,
therefore mistakes can be acknowledged and ultimately corrected, unlike Islam where the messages came
either directly from God (Allah) or from his emissary Gabriel directly to Muhammad making its recorded
messages (the Quran) impossible to change, causing the Shiites and Sunnis to kill each other over the
interpretations and rights of control with the Sunni sect demanding free elections among the people to elect a
caliph to head the community, and their protagonists the Shiites demanding a leader in a blood line of
succession  from Muhammad, as the undisputed leader of Islam. This vying for control has being going since the
death of Muhammad some 1300 years ago. Still many of the Christian fundamentalists today are just as
adamant in their beliefs as are the Muslims, but obviously, and thankfully a little more peaceful. The changes in
scripture presented in the Urantia revelation are there to set the record straight for anyone with clarity of mind who
is willing to synthesize its messages. There is literally nothing comparable to this book on the planet today, and it
has become a saving grace to just about everyone who has perused its contents.

Our book is a hard sell to scripture readers who look at it as a direct attack on their lifelong beliefs obtained from
Bible, having mistakenly concluded that it is the word of God. However, while I can understand their reasoning, I
think it is delusional (unreasonable), simply because from a logical point of view if any part of it is wrong it can’t
be the word of God. If Adam and Eve were the first humans and appeared about 6,000 years ago it invalidates all
scientific disciplines relating to human origins and cultures (anthropology, archeology, and paleontology); and if
Noah built an ark of such great size, approximately 450 feet long by 150 feet wide – the length of one and a half
football fields, how did he maneuver it. It would have required a thousand oarsmen, or a crew of 500 to man the
sails, and of course a thousand tons of food just to feed the dinosaurs each week. And if he missed an animal or
two how did he get back to collect one if its partner died along the way.

Everything in this universe age points to evolution, so to maintain the belief that humans and animals all
appeared pretty much at the same time, only to later have the humans removed by God and the animals saved by
one family defies all reason in an enlightened age. All of these events and a lot more had to be clarified if
Christianity was to survive within the institutional churches, and according to our revelation they may not survive if
they don’t soon rally around the truth. Many of us don’t realize how fortunate we really are to have exposure to this
revelation until we have spent time studying other religions and religious philosophies foreign to our revelation. I
personally have no idea where I would be today (religiously) had I not discovered this revelation in 1958.

Through experience we have come to recognize that millions of our fellow beings are living in denial in that they
refuse to believe that animals preceded us on the planet by well over 100 million years. The dinosaurs are an
enigma to our Christian brethren who simply refuse to believe in them since they aren’t mentioned in the Bible.
The fact that they can be fairly accurately age dated means nothing to them. In a vain effort to substantiate their
mistaken history they spend an inordinate amount of time searching for Noah’s ark, or trying to validate the
Shroud of Turin, and continue to search for the Holy Grail. All the while the supernal teachings of magnanimous
universe entities and their Creator Son have been laid before them while they commit the same mistakes as the
Sanhedrin 2000 years ago by denying the reality of it all. They believe in creationism, original sin, appeasement
of God, (the sacrifice of Jesus to appease his Father in order to save our sins), the virgin birth, a universal flood
wherein an angry God destroyed his errant children because none of them were behaving properly; a God who
sets forth an eternal hell for miscreants, and a wrathful and vindictive God Whose anger is vented on His own
creation - and invariably they refuse to believe anything to the contrary. All of these things had to eventually be
addressed at some time for Christianity to exist as a credible religion for the sake of the youth in tomorrow’s
alternative churches. Churches will have a place in society for a long time to come, but they are going to have to
get more real or bring in bigger bands on the week end to try to save them. Evangelism is at the crest of its
heyday yet is no longer capable of stimulating many of our youth who are now beginning to perceive its theatrics
as a carnival side show act (playing with serpents, rolling in the aisles, speaking in tongues, phony miraculous
healings, bobbing to the music of the choir, and all accompanied by a hell, fire and brimstone sermon).

As mentioned in last months report thousands of people still prefer a religion that requires little thinking – a
social experience where friends meet to hear a spiritual message presented by a friendly priest or churchly
authority, for as the book says: “It is all too true that such a church would not have survived unless there had been
men in the world who preferred such a style of worship.  Many spiritually indolent souls crave an ancient and
authoritative religion of ritual and sacred traditions.” While this is certainly true of Christianity, it is especially even
more true of Islam, which has virtually enslaved its devotees in meaningless rituals since its inception some
1300 years ago.

Islam has no real future other than where it remains today. Meaningful growth is inherently impossible, whereas
Christianity while not coming directly from God harbors within its tenets a viable escape valve: the fallibility of its
authorship (the scribes), faulty research, forgetfulness and memory distortion, and indirect contacts with their
sources of information (Luke, for example, never met with Jesus, but through interviews with scores of people
who had, thus allowing him to present a plausible account of Jesus’ life). Paul, on the other hand, ascribed his
own personal beliefs to formulate his works, setting it forth not as opinion, but rather as inspired – permission
from “above”. These anomalies allow for the changes that the Urantia book has presented without offending
those of honest mind, a luxury that some other religions don’t possess. Jesus said to follow the truth wherever it
may lead, therefore all of us have to be open minded to be receptive to new truths if we are to advance spiritually.
Dead concepts only create spiritual stagnation. Keep in mind the above quotation:
“The modern age will refuse to
accept a religion which is inconsistent with facts and out of harmony with its highest conceptions of truth, beauty
and goodness.”

Until next time – “Be of good cheer”
